The Songs of Dougie Young

Dougie sang about where he was and who he was with. I am so glad AIATSIS has made this available.

It was great hearing these old songs from a true master who I first heard his songs in the movie Backroads and then on that great CD Buried Country. They are songs of truth and humour and gentle protest and the likes of Young Dougie will be hard to find again. He was a true pioneer so thank you for keeping his legacy alive. I would recommend this CD for any who have an interest in Aboriginal culture in any form but especially our rich musical culture.

Dougie Young wrote, played on guitar and sung his highly original songs which were inspired by his life experiences as an Aboriginal male from Wilcannia in outback western New South Wales in about the third quarter of the twentieth century. His songs were widely known and sung. His themes are sometimes earthy and humorous but always contain a characteristic element of humanity and a background of a fringe black-white culture. Recordings were made in the field in some instances which affects sound quality.
