From the artist

This year’s theme, Give to Gain, celebrates the strength found in sharing, supporting and uplifting one another. For generations, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have led through giving, sharing knowledge, caring for family, nurturing Country and strengthening community.

My artwork embodies these values through the image of generations of women’s hands uplifting one another, symbolising the resilience and solidarity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women. Held within the palms of these hands are representations of the many roles our women have always played: mothers, sisters, friends, activists, leaders and carers.

The blooming pink flannel flowers rising toward the golden light reflect the beauty and strength that emerge from adversity. This rare native flower blooms only after fire, much like our women who continue to rise, nurture and thrive despite the challenges.

At the heart of the piece, a baby reaches toward the sun, representing a future shaped by the love, wisdom and care passed down through generations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women.

About the creator

Each year at AIATSIS we celebrate International Women’s Day to acknowledge the women around the globe who continue to empower women and girls through leadership, advocacy, strength and courage. Whether its women in their local communities and regions or on the international stage, women continue to strive to make a difference to the lives of children and families.

Over the years, we have produced an International Women’s Day poster that features an inspirational image from the AIATSIS Collection or a prominent role model in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
